From anidb: After scaling Mt. Everest, mountain climbing partners Saruwatari Gorou and “Lostman” Jack F. Woodbridge see the ISA Space Station, and each vows to make the trek into outerspace. When Helium 3, a new energy source, is discovered on the moon, NASA forms a new project named “Nexus” to harness that energy for use on earth. This is the story of the two and the paths they take to see their dream become a reality in the quest to harness the next-generation energy source.
Since i liked PlanetES so much one of my friends recommended me Moonlight Mile saying i wont be dissepointed with it. Why i bring PlanetES into this review is because i belive it could easily have become a PlanetEs prequel as PlanetES takes place where the moon have already been colonized by humans and Helium-3 is already being extracted from the moon dust. Moonligt mile is before that even happens, the beginning of the process so to say.
Moonlight Mile starts you of with a bang but when you reach the end of the first season the strong feelings i had from the start had changed quite a bit. One of the reasons for this is because i feel that Moonlight Mile do not know what it want to portray to the audience. At the start you get teh tale of friends with strong goals and the after a while the story changes to one of suspense as you watch fatal situations unfold. By the end of that it is like a train that is just about to derail as conspiracy investigations spans the rest of the episodes. It goes off in too many directions and never develops any one particular plot line in a full way.
The main characters Jack Lostman and Gorou Saruwatari is the good part is this series while i belive that all the rest are the weak part of the show as there is little to none time put on the introduction of these characters. Most of then end up coming in for one episodes and then they are gone. What good is it doing to introduce so many new characters and just use them for such a short time ? in my opinion it is not doing anyting to create a good cast of characters. You will ofcourse se developement from Gorou and Lostman as they are set on their goal for the moon during the time they are not screwing any woman, Because that is what they do most of the time. I would argue that in this series women are just expendable sex toys wich are used byt Gorou and Lostman to show of their manliness.
On the otherhand the animation for this series is what i would say to be the very best but not perfect. Wonderfull CG is used on vehicles during shuttles lunch into space and such, but during most of the the fight scenes it is not good at all. It looks like your standard action movie where the hero never get hit one single time. But if you would forget that it is not important as most of the good stuff was focused on the scenes in space like it should.
I also found it very amazing how the orchestral feel of the music was pefectly selected to set the mode for the show. The sweeping ambience that it instill made me want to travel to space one of these days.
As for conclusion i still enjoyed this series a lot even if there are some problems. I am awating the finish of season 2 and will watch that as soon as i can. I also belive that Moonlight Mile stands tall up among the few realistic space animes that there is today, and i would recommend this to anyone.
