If you have seen the first season of Nurarihyon no Mago or read my review of it you probably know that i did not like it very much. I knew there was a second season out and i got the urge to stab myself before watching it so that i could focus on the pain instead of the show.
Nurarihyon no Mago – Sennen Makyou is attempting to repair what the first show did wrong, and to some effect, it the repair work paid of quite good. Right from the start Sennen Makyou if much different from what it was the first time around, it has a much darker ambiance now. The shows focus is not on Rikuos childish self anymore but on hes non human part which is quite a lost more interesting. Instead of snaillike pacing the show has now turned up a few gears and has quite a lot of action, fighting a blood to satisfy your needs. What is more interesting is that the show now takes you back in time, it is going to give you quite a bit of story on how Rihan(Rikuos father) died, it is also going to give you story on how Rikuos father was while he was the Lord of Pandemonium. It is quite interesting to watch and fun to get answers to the questions that the first season left us with.
Another thing that you might remember from the first season is the focus it also had on Rikuo’s classmates, in this season they are there and they are doing their yokai investigating like earlier but they are not the focus anymore and they are not seen as much as earlier. I like that Sennen Makyou noticed that the first season was boring and that the majority of the people did not like it, what it did then was to try something different which payed of bigtime. I have high hopes for the next season if it will come as it went from boring to awesome in my eyes.
As for the animation i feel like it has improved, the battle scenes are very well animated and everything is much more fluid this time around. The backgrounds were quite detailed as well from time to time. For example, during a battle, we got to se the background of Kyoto city which was quite nice.
The music was just like the first season, the opening and ending was nothing special that tried to step out to show itself. This time i did notice the background music much more then the first season but that aswell was nothing to special that made anything better or worse.
Overall, if you haven’t watched any of the seasons yet i recommend that you start to read the Manga upto where the first arc end and the Kyoto arc start, then watch season 2 of the anime cause i feel that if you watch season 1 of the anime, you will not want to watch it anymore.
