High school comedy has never been high up on my list of things to watch, i did not actually want to watch this one but there was some good reviews on the net that made me decide to actually have a look at it, i think the OCD i had about halfway trough it is what made me keep following the main story.
The story starts of dramatically in the first few episodes where out protagonist Rebecca Miyamoto return to japan after being educated over in the US at MIT as the youngest person ever to graduate from there, now as she wants to become a Japanese school teacher instead, the problem is just that she is just 11 years of age. Just by reading this i was wondering how the hell this story could ever work, well it don’t. However, what do work in this anime is the humor of Pani Poni Dash, it will keep you distracted from most other shortcomings that this series has as the jokes and gags are the key to this anime as the are everywhere you look. A good example is the chalkboards in classes that is changing all the time. Some of the jokes you might miss if they are not subbed, but you will not miss to many of them as they are mostly visual jokes that will make you laugh really good. Pani Poni Dash coordinates these kind of jokes really well, Whenever a character is talking, something will most likely happen in the background. The creators manage to stuff so much in just one episode. They try to give enough room for each of the side-characters, even if it is just one second in an episode.
Shaft has not done to much impressive work with the animation for Pani Poni Dash, The characters look sort of like cardboard cutouts one minute, then they are like puppets the next one. this is one of those shortcomings that you will learn to neglect due to all the comedy going on instead. don’t get me wrong just because i bash on the animation as this is one of the tricks they use to further the jokes.
As for the music i recommend that you do listen to the three different opening that this show has, i also recommend the whole soundtrack but the openings the most. They are really good, even if the lyrics wont make sense at all. It got a good swinging sixties style to a tuneful spoof, the whole soundtrack works extremely well.
If you are to watch Pani Poni Dash because of the story i would recommend you find something else because it just didn’t excite or interest me at all. However, if you like jokes and w ant to really laugh your ass of, then you should take a look at this series.
